Milford Sound at first light
Queenstown & the Southern Lakes · 667 tours

The lake is only the start.

Milford in a day, jet boats through the Shotover canyons, Gibbston pinot before dinner and the Remarkables watching all of it: what each trip is like, what it costs, where to book.

Book these first

Seven that anchor the whole trip.

A first trip to Queenstown runs on about seven bookings: one long day to Fiordland, one boat on Wakatipu, something loud on the Shotover, an afternoon in Gibbston. These are the ones that hold their price and their weather.

The long day south

Milford earns the early alarm.

Out of town before six, along the Devil’s Staircase with the lake still black, over the Milford Road and through the Homer Tunnel, then onto the water under Mitre Peak by early afternoon. Twelve hours door to door, and nobody asks for the shorter version afterwards.

After the light goes

The sky here is a protected thing.

Two hours up the road, the Mackenzie Basin is one of the darkest certified skies on earth: the Magellanic Clouds without a telescope, Mount John’s domes open to visitors, and the Southern Cross sitting where you expect Orion. Closer to town, a guide with a laser pointer and a flask does the same job on a clear night.

Twenty minutes east

Lunch runs long in Gibbston.

Central Otago grows the pinot noir that other regions apologise for not growing. Four cellar doors in a schist gorge, a cave dug into the hillside at one of them, and a driver so nobody has to count glasses.

Nerve required

This town made falling a business.

The Kawarau bridge took the world’s first paying bungy jumper in 1988 and the place never really calmed down. Jet boats at 85kmh through the Shotover canyons, tandem exits at 15,000 feet over the Remarkables, grade three water on the Kawarau.

The road to the head of the lake

Forty-six kilometres of no guardrail.

The Glenorchy road hugs Wakatipu the whole way, past Bennetts Bluff to a red shed, a wharf and a valley the film crews called Isengard. Beyond it the Dart braids out into beech forest that only a jet boat or a horse can reach.

Where to point the car

Pick the valley, then the day.

Everything worth doing sits at the end of a drive. Glenorchy for the road in. Gibbston for lunch. Te Anau for the early Fiordland start. Arrowtown when the poplars turn.

What kind of day

Water, air, or high country?

Same mountains, twelve different ways to be in them. Pick the one that sounds like your kind of afternoon and everything behind it is already priced.

Out of the valley

The best days start on State Highway 6.

Fiordland is south, the Mackenzie is north, and both are close enough to be back for dinner. Every one of these leaves in the dark and returns with the camera full.
